Who can be hypnotised?
When people say that they went to a hypnotist and `nothing happened`, I ask them what they expected to happen and I invariably find that they either hadn`t been adequately informed or hadn`t understood what to expect, ahead of the session - they`d erroneously adhered to their belief that they needed be unconscious, and / or like a zombie in a movie. It is helpful for prospective clients to be carefully and repeatedly informed of what hypnosis is and is NOT and to realize the potential for positive and empowering effects. Personally, I find it beneficial to reiterate briefly what to expect before every session,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even with clients who `know the drill`.

Who cannot be hypnotised?
~ A person unwilling to be hypnotised. If someone doesn’t want to use hypnosis, then of course they won’t be hypnotised. Hypnosis is a powerful tool but it does rely on your willingness to use it.

~ A person with extremely low intelligence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], typically scoring an IQ level lower than 70
~ someone who has no rapport with the hypnotist or hypnotherapist. While this isn`t always included in the list,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I`m going to add rapport as a factor. It is helpful to have a good or reasonable rapport with the person who is about to hypnotise you. You need to be comfortable with that person as they’re going to guide you into relaxation.

~ people who suffer from epilepsy are often advised not to use hypnosis. As always, if you have any concerns regarding such conditions, you should consult with a doctor.

During the initial free phone or Skype consultation I do with prospective clients, I check for the following things:
~ whether they expect it will work.
~ whether THEY want it work. I’ve capitalised ‘they’ because it’s important that the person calling me wants it to work, instead of, for example, their partner, spouse, work colleagues want them to do it.
Who should not be hypnotised?
Everybody is in a hypnotic state at some point of each day. By this I mean, a state where we’re doing things but not needing to concentrate consciously on doing it as it’s a familiar activity. I don’t just mean vegging out in front of a movie - a person can even be in a state of hypnosis while running. For example, during the spring and summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], i.e. when the track is visible in the parks here in Canada, I run 4 or 5 miles every other day in the beautiful St Lawrence parks. I do the same route and at the end, (presuming I don’t need to move out of the way for slow moving SUVs filled with people who prefer to experience the park by looking out of their truck windows at the view),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I actually have no recollection of having done my run. I look at the stop watch on my cell phone and know I must have done it by looking at the time passed, but I only remember starting it. That’s because I don’t need to be consciously aware of where I’m running. If a truck has to go by me, then my conscious mind needs to become alert again so I can move out of its or their way.

But there is one positive side to all of this. Contrary to popular belief, I see many people with UARS who self proclaim themselves as being lazy, compensate for their chronic fatigue and lack of energy by becoming overachievers, being highly productive and creative in everything they do, going non-stop during the day, but crashing at night. They're also much more attuned to their bodies, being proactive about their health, and taking care of whatever illnesses they have before they become huge problems.
More than a few times per month, I have patients comment that they think others perceive them as being lazy. Whether they like to "sleep in" or have trouble getting up in the mornings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or if they're prone to taking naps in the afternoon, their sleepiness often elicits other's perception of them as being lazy or unproductive. Add to this a saying from Proverbs: "Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless man goes hungry." Given that this type of work ethic runs deep in our modern day culture, it's difficult to avoid being called lazy if you're not the first one in the office and the last one to leave.
Also,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in this constant state of readiness, blood is taken away from your gastrointestinal system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your reproductive organs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your skin or your hands and feet. However, there are those who can't sustain this high energy lifestyle especially as they get older and they start gaining weight. What happens for many of these patients is that they now progress into a more severe form of sleep breathing problem like OSA.
Sleepy or Sleep Deprived?
If you have UARS, a number of different scenarios can occur: the tongue falls back, and you can wake up after a few seconds, with you panting, in a sweat, your heart racing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in a state of panic. Or you wake up from deep to light sleep only, never realizing that your sleep was disturbed.
Fighting While Sleeping
To Breathe Or Not To Breathe
However, laziness may have less to do with sleep than it does with how well one is breathing while they're sleeping. Without assessing the latter, it would be wrong to assume the former.
Typically, most self professed "lazy" people don't look forward to waking up in the morning. On more than one occasion, patients have complained that they "curse the mornings" when they have to get up. Often it takes multiple cups of coffee, or vigorous exercise, before they feel even somewhat functional. Naps are also a requisite for most of these people and almost all of them crash at night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], completely exhausted by the time they get to bed. In the morning, they never feel refreshed-always feeling like they've slept only for a few hours.
It's taken for granted that all humans have rigid, open windpipes that allow air to pass easily from the nose through the lungs. What's unique about the human upper airway, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is that due to our unique ability to talk, our voice boxes are much lower down, underneath the tongue, which forces the tongue to rotate backwards. This is fine when you're awake, but when you're on your back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the tongue and voice box falls back partially due to gravity. Furthermore, when you go into deep sleep, your throat and tongue muscles relax, then with a bit of deep inspiration, the tongue falls back completely to occlude the 1-2 mm airway space behind the tongue.
Many supposed "lazy" people that I see in my practice often have a sleep breathing problem called Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (or UARS for short). This often occurs to those who have a smaller than average airway opening, or a bigger than average tongue to jaw size ratio. And for those who suffer from UARS, this is the primary reason why they're not getting the deep and restful sleep that they truly need and desperately desire.
Also, if you stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer, and then wake up, then you just had an apnea or a "loss of breath" due to an obstructed airway. Five or more apneas per hour is in the range of having obstructive sleep apnea. But even if you stop breathing 20-30 times every hour, each lasting anywhere from 1-9 seconds, you'll be told you don't have any apneas, so therefore there's nothing clinically wrong with you.
Another physiologic phenomenon that many UARS patients experience is that they're constantly under a low grade state of stress or anxiety.Whether or not they feel this way while they're awake, while they're sleeping, their bodies are in a constant mode of "fight or flight." Both hormonally and neurologically, having UARS can put your body under enormous stress. Since you're never able to reach a deep level of sleep, and stay in a sustained state of light sleep,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your entire nervous system goes en guarde,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and becomes hypersensitive. Even your emotions and senses are heightened, including your hearing, vision, taste, and smell. Simultaneously, you are exhausted all the time.

The other common misperception people have about other sleepy people is that they must have trouble sleeping or that they have insomnia. Managers are afraid to be wrong, ever clinging onto their job and hiding in between cubicles, spending the day writing emails back and forth to other managers. There is no concrete action behind these emails, only ideas that never get implemented because they could result in negative attention on the management team.
There is a big difference between managers and leaders. Managers are those who come to work, make sure all subordinates are getting the necessary tasks done,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then leave at 5:00, never to really make a difference.

While managers are often afraid to make their teams better, carrying a thought process that one could take their job, leaders are afraid not to better their teams, since bettering the team prevents turnovers and moves an organization forward.
Managers will sit in a boardroom and waste time conversing about topics that have been beaten to death,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Leaders know that this is a waste of time. Leaders are busy conveying their vision to those under them and getting them to buy into it.
Managers micromanage, overseeing every minute detail. Leaders allow for new ideas to be implemented and feel the reward is worth the risk. When a manager attempts to train, he or she is met with skepticism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as their subordinates feel that they are only it in for themselves.
When something goes wrong, managers are quick to point the finger and cultivate an organization full of "It Wasn't Me" folks. There is always an answer why something went wrong and it is never them. Leaders take responsibility for their actions. They hold their subordinates accountable for their work and they are no exception to the rule.
Subordinates trust leaders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They know that the leader has their best interest in heart.
Leaders are the ones who form and grow a company,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Grand National Party (GNP) leader Lee Hoi-chang unexpectedly visited former President Kim Young-sam Friday for a breakfast meeting and asked for his support in light of the creation of a fourth political party. There's no law requiring those who represent us in the National Assembly be rich. They can still do good and noble politics without money. This being so, there wouldn't seem to be any logical need to care how much income tax is being paid by members of the National Assembly. That 27% of candidates National Assembly candidates paid no income tax,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one might think,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], should not be ground-shaking news. When there are additional questions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as issue as to how truthfully a candidate has reported his taxes or how transparent his income is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then the situation changes. Our tax system is indeed a problem, having so many defects and loopholes as it does,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and making tax payment more transparent remains an important task ahead. But if candidates have used their knowledge of short comings in the tax system, then it is their basic ethical standing as public figures which is first at issue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and not first a
question of problems with the tax code.
An analysis of the tax reports filed by the 27% would show that most of them
didn't earn enough income to be required to pay any taxes, but almost half of

often paid a very small sum in taxes, having reported strangely low
earnings. It has even been revealed that those employed in jobs classified
as highly paid professionals on average pay less in income tax than those in
ordinary jobs. For most of us, there is no way to tell whether the small
amounts remitted as taxes were made possible because they truly had little
income,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because of thoughtful and lawful tax-saving strategies, or because
these candidates reported far less than they actually earned,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. No voter will
want to see a candidate who has never paid his or her proper share of income

While Winter tends to be the time of year for reflection and planning, so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too, is Spring. When we enter the New Year, we are excited about our plans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our resolutions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and we move full steam ahead to bring them into our reality. Then....the challenges and obstacles appear and our "ego mind" puts on
the brakes. You see, our "ego mind" doesn't like change because it views change as a danger and the "ego mind" wants to keep us safe. If you've stopped yourself from
